Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a modern day light therapy used to improve skin texture. It is used to reduce wrinkles, birth marks, varicose veins, sun tan, age spots and unwanted hair. Unlike other laser therapies, the light emitted by IPL laser is of different wavelengths. The light beam is more scattered and less focused than a laser. IPL is a broadband pulsed light source and other lasers have a monochromatic coherent light source. It penetrates deep down into the second layer of skin without harming upper layer and thus causes very less damage to the skin. It targets on the melanin of hair follicles and gives permanent results.
The light is absorbed by the pigment cells of skin which is then converted into heat. This heat removes unwanted pigment and clears up uneven texture and dark spots from the skin. It also removes hair follicles and thus inhibits the growth of hair again. It also stimulates collagen production which enhances skin elasticity and minimizes aging effects.
Before IPL therapy, the skin care specialist checks up whether the skin is free of any kind of skin problems like eczema, pimples or allergies. Those skin problems can hinder the action of IPL therapy and must be cured before starting the procedure. The skin care specialist suggests to avoid certain things like direct exposure to sunlight, waxing, drugs like Aspirin and Ibuprofen that can increase the chances of bleeding.
The general cost for IPL therapy can range from $600-$1200. Added on charges can vary depending upon the follow up, visits, anaesthesia etc.
In the procedure, firstly the area to be treated is cleared and a soft gel is applied on the skin. Then light pulses from IPL device are pierced into the skin. Dark glasses are to be worn during treatment to prevent eyes from getting damaged by the light. Depending upon the area to be treated, it can take 30-40 minutes in the whole procedure. There can be 6 sittings in the whole skin treatment with a gap of one month in each sitting.
After the treatment the skin stays reddish and sensitive for few hours. Hot water baths, direct sunlight and harsh cosmetics should be avoided few days after the treatment. The cosmetics containing benzoyl peroxide, retinol or glycolic acid.
The IPL laser treatment is quicker than any other laser. It prevents upper layer from getting damaged. Its light penetrates deep into the skin and provides permanent results.
