If you’re considering a Maui wedding, congratulations! The island of Maui is one of the most beautiful places on earth to begin your life together. And while many couples choose a standard package from a local photographer or resort photographer, taking more time to find someone who understands what makes your Maui wedding unique can make all the difference in the world.
If you’re new to Hawaii, choosing a photographer on Maui may not be easy since there are so many photographers here. So we’ve put together this list of the top 5 questions to ask when searching for your new Maui wedding photographer:
1) Ask To See Their Work In A Recent Wedding
It doesn’t matter how big the photographer’s studio is, if they have a huge bridal portrait studio or if their website has thousands of photos. You want to see what you are paying for! Most quality Maui wedding photographer will have some gallery on their site with many more images that are not shown on the main pages. Remember, they are professionals and will be able to produce the types of images you desire.
2) Request An On Location Shoot If You Want Photos With Surroundings
An on-location shoot is when the photographer comes to your desired Hawaiian venue with backdrops, lighting & props. This is done for two reasons. First, it allows the photographer to scope out the location beforehand, ensuring it will work well for photographing your wedding. Secondly, you want to make sure that he or she can produce the types of images you are looking for in terms of backgrounds & angles.
3) Ask Your Photographer What To Bring
Your photographer should provide a list of items to bring to your Maui wedding shoot. Depending upon the time of day, you may discuss the types of outfits so they can be prepared ahead of time. Your photographer should also ask if you bring any children along or if any pets need to be photographed during the shoot.
4) Ask About Their Prop & Costume Collection
Maui is unique when it comes to location shoots. You will likely need to take photos with our beautiful surroundings in the background. Maui has many options for this, including waterfalls, beaches, cliffs, grassy fields, wooded areas, and much more. Your photographer must have access to a prop & costume collection so they can provide a wide variety of images.
5) Ask Your Photographer If They Have A Backup Plan For Rainy Days
Most photographers will have multiple backdrops and lighting for inside or rainy days. However, there are some places where it’s impossible to photograph indoors, which means your photographer should be able to think on their feet. Over the years, every photographer on Maui has experienced shooting in some pretty difficult weather conditions, including high winds and torrential rains.
