Firefighter Tests That Examine Physical Ability

.

Firefighter tests are designed to evaluate individuals on their physical, psychological, and mental strengths. These tests are mostly conducted on rookies; however, even experienced firefighters may occasionally get tested to prove their agility on the job. According to Solutions Recruitment Agency, here are the 5 main physical tests that are carried out when recruiting firemen.

1. Ladder Test

This test mainly focuses on your ability to work at different heights. The first phase of the ladder test tries to determine whether the rookie knows how to anchor the ladder firmly before commencing the climb. In addition, firemen can only use the ladder if they are wearing their personal protective equipment or PPE.

Once the fireman ascends the ladder, they are required to initiate a leg lock while on the ladder. The leg lock ensures you do not fall down while trying to gain access to a story building or when rescuing victims on high grounds.

2. Casualty Evacuation Test

In this test, the examiner is mainly evaluating the rookie’s upper and lower body strengths. Casualty evacuation involves carrying a victim out of a disastrous situation and away to safety. A firefighter should be able to carry a weight of 55kg or 121 pounds across a 30-meter stretch effortlessly.

3. Enclosed space test

This is one of the toughest firefighter tests that evaluate physical ability. Here, the instructor is keen on finding out whether you can do your job even in enclosed spaces. Moreover, this test evaluates your ability to work in environments where your vision is obscured. If you are claustrophobic, this would be your best chance to prove that you can overcome your fears and do the job.

4. Equipment Carrying Test

Here the firefighter recruit will be tested on their overall body strength, stamina, and aerobic fitness. Exercises in this test include picking up 70mm hoses and carrying them to a 100m distance or dragging a hose reel to a distance of 25 meters and back. In addition, you will also be tested on your ability to carry a 2.4-meter suction hose to a distance of 100 meters then run back the same 100 meters. You may also be required to carry a light portable pump that weighs 30 kgs over a 100m distance.

Bottom-line

Firefighter tests not only test on physical ability but also the mental capacity to perform on the job. The above tests are commonly carried out on rookies. However, your fire chief may randomly examine your abilities even as an experienced firefighter to ensure you are still the right fit for the job.
