While the re-usability of ceramics is great, there are many situations that call for disposable plates. Ceramic plates are less practical for large parties, or for outdoor events such as barbecues. Namely, any situation where there is a risk of dropping and shattering a plate.

Disposable plates may have their advantages but are unfortunately commonly made from non-recyclable materials. As such, despite their convenience, many people are reluctant to use disposable plates, or otherwise would prefer a more environmentally-conscious option.
What is a Compostable Plate?

Compostable plates offer a compromise to customers looking for the practical benefits of disposable plates, without the environmental implications. These plates are made from compostable organic materials that decompose naturally, providing nutrients to your garden plants after use. They offer a green alternative when catering for large groups or in outdoor environments.

Most of these plates are made from bagasse, a byproduct of sugar manufacturing. Once the sugar cane has been processed, it leaves behind the fibers of the cane, which can be used to make, among other items, plates. Crucially, these fibers can biodegrade.

The Usage of Compostable Plates

After use, you can simply throw compostable plates in the compost bin. They slowly decompose to become usable compost. However, too many plates added to a bin at a time can disrupt the delicate balance of a compost pile, so it is best to add them slowly. It can also be helpful to break the plates into smaller, manageable pieces before adding them to the pile to speed up the process of composting.

We would recommend setting aside a bin or container clearly marked for the plates where guests can leave their plates. Care should be taken to ensure the plates are separated from any non-compostable materials such as cutlery, meats, or certain cooked foods. The plates should also be kept in a dry place before use or before addition to the compost pile; damp conditions can cause the plates to begin rotting, and render them unusable.

Other Alternatives to Compostables and Ceramics

Items such as compostable plates are environmentally friendly, so are more and more popular among those looking to minimize their impact on the planet. Some people may find compostables to be impractical for individual reasons, but still want to reduce their plastic usage, and may prefer these other alternatives:

Paper — paper products will often contain recycled materials and, being organic, will biodegrade; however, some plates contain a plastic coating which inhibits the process of decomposition.

Ceramics — a reusable plate, especially when washed with an environmentally-friendly detergent, ceramics are good for the environment and prevent more items from entering the waste chain.

Edible materials — food can also be provided on an edible surface such as lettuce or bread, which can be a fun and amusing alternative to traditional plates.

With these alternatives, it’s easy to combine the practicalities of paper plates with an environmentally-conscious outlook.
