You have chosen the colour of your rug — a wonderfully vibrant bright blue, so after that major decision, the rest is easy — right? – wrong — there is a lot more to buying a rug than simply choosing the colour.

Now you know the colour and where you want to put your bright blue rug you need to make sure that you are looking at the right size. Many people simply assume that you measure the area and that will be perfect, however, it is more complicated than that.

The room that you have your rug will have a profound effect on the size. If it is to be used in the living room then you need to consider the perimeter of the rug in relation to the furniture. Do you want the legs of the sofa or armchairs to be on the rug, only the front two or totally off the rug? Remember that for uniformity this consideration will apply to all of the furniture in the central arrangement so if your sofa has two legs on the rug then your armchair should follow suit.

In a similar way, a rug for the dining room means that you need to work out the distance the chairs are from the table. You do not want people to feel that they are falling off the rug when they push their chairs back so experiment with sitting to the table and pushing yourself back to gauge an idea of the amount of space you are dealing with.

In the bedroom you are looking for a rug that extends both sides of the bed (unless your bed is next to the wall) — make sure that it is at least 70 cm so that there is sufficient space to compatible place your feet. As with the legs of the dining room table and sofa, it is important, that if you are having a rug that is under the bed, that all legs are on the rug to avoid a wobble and thus a poor night’s sleep.

Having chosen the size, the rug location also dictates the type of rug that is suitable. If the rug is to be an area, where there is a lot of wear and tear and a possibility of getting dirty then you should opt for a flat weave or a very low pile rug that is much more resistant. On the other hand, the more luxurious high pile shag rug is ideal for areas where comfort and softness (such as the bedroom) is essential.

Rug buying is a complex and fun task — so turn your bright blue rug into a feature piece and purchase today.
