You can become a PADI dive instructor by taking the PADI Divemaster Course and then the PADI IDC. Your IDC will take you through the entire range of PADI core recreational level courses as well as several specialty programs. The IDC is designed to develop your knowledge of teaching and leadership skills as well as your understanding of the physics, physiology, and equipment of diving.

The IDC is conducted at a PADI training center or resort with a dedicated staff and is taught by a certified course director. Depending on the type of facility you choose, they may offer more extensive professional development opportunities as well as job placement assistance.

Choosing where to do your IDC can be a daunting task and is best done with some research. Make sure you find a reputable and accredited center with a high reputation for quality dive training. Ask if the program is offered at multiple locations, whether it’s offered in large or small groups, and who the course director is.

You will need to bring with you the following items during your IDC: Your PADI Instructor / IDC Crew-Pak, all your PADI Diver Manuals, Recreational Dive Planner (Table and eRDPML) and your personal Logbook. You will also need your Scuba Diving Equipment (Wetsuit, Hood, Regulator with Dive Computer Compass & Whistle).

The IDC can be completed in person at our location or online through eLearning. You can also choose to complete the IDC in multiple locations across the country or around the globe. You can even do your IDC in conjunction with a dive trip abroad to get an idea of the local culture and environment.

The first step to becoming a Padi Dive Instructor is to become a certified diver. You must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of 50 logged dives to qualify for the instructor training program. Once you have met these requirements, you can enroll in the instructor training program.

The instructor training program is a rigorous two-week course that covers all aspects of diving instruction. You will learn how to teach beginner divers, how to manage dive trips, and how to safely navigate diving conditions.

Types

There are a few different types of Padi Dive Instructor Programs. The first type is the Padi Dive Instructor Development Course or IDC. This program is for people who want to become dive instructors. The program is ten days long and teaches you how to be a Padi Instructor.

The second type of Padi Dive Instructor Program is the Padi Assistant Instructor course. This course is for people who want to help out with dive instruction but don’t want to become full-fledged instructors. The course is two days long and teaches you how to be an assistant instructor.

The third type of Padi Dive Instructor Program is the Open Water Scuba Instructor course. This course is for people who want to become dive instructors but don’t have time for the IDC.

What Dive Instructor Courses are Available? There are several different Dive Rescue courses available around the world but not all of them will prepare you to be an instructor.

Some Dive Rescue programs only offer certification (not necessary for instructors) and some focus on teaching methods without offering any certifications at all! The most useful Dive Instructors come from PADI’s “Divemaster” course which is offered by many dive shops across the globe.

Once completed with this program, you can work towards becoming a Dive Instructor through their “Assistant Instructor Development Course.” An Assistant Instructor helps lead dives while the more experienced professionals take care of business in the office or instruct other classes – it’s up to your desired level whether or not you want to continue diving full-time or become a Dive Instructor.

The Divemaster Course is the second step in PADI’s ladder of certifications and helps take your underwater abilities to even greater depths – literally!

After you’ve completed all three courses, you can look into starting up your own Dive Shop with their “Instructor Trainer Program” so that you can train future divers yourself! Some students quit this course part way through when they realize how much work it requires but if done correctly, it will put an extra $1000-$3000 dollars in your pocket every month just for doing what comes naturally to many SCUBA enthusiasts. And yes – there are women who do this job successfully!
