Best Fiberglass Boat Paint Options

.

When it comes to fiberglass boat paint, there’s a lot of options. It depends on where you live and what kind of budget you have. Most people are surprised to learn that practically every type of paint is available in a marine-grade variety. The main downside with marine-grade paints over their automotive counterparts is the price. It’s important to note; there’s no difference between regular automotive paint and ‘marine’ or ‘exterior’ grade paint other than the price!

The truth is, a quality automotive grade paint will provide a longer-lasting finish and be more resistant to the scorching sun, salt environment, and general wear and tear of boating. It’s great for amateur sailors, as it can be found at most home improvement/automotive retailers. The only downside is that contrary to popular belief, some automotive paints do NOT contain high levels of zinc-chromate, which is required for direct application to fiberglass. The good news is, it’s easy to add another layer of ‘marine’ paint over top of the automotive-grade if you’re worried about fading. If you want to be safe, there’s no downside to using a marine environment ‘compatible’ automotive paint.

Another option is to purchase quality marine-grade paint. The advantage here is the price, as it tends to be 10x cheaper than automotive varieties. You may not get the longest-lasting finish or professional glossy look, but it will last in most cases. Also, if you’re looking for something to repaint your boat every year, it’s a good option as it’s so much cheaper than automotive paints.

The final and most expensive option is to purchase a long-lasting ‘Lifetime’ marine grade paint. The manufacturer claims you only need one coat, and the finish will last 5-6 years before needing any work (under normal wear and tear conditions). It can also be used for fiberglass, aluminum, metal, and wood.

A good idea would be to approach Fiberglass Boat Paint painters who can guide you through the process and recommend what to use. You can hire professional painters who will be more than happy to give you a quote and provide the best solution. Before selecting any paint, make sure you do your own research beforehand. Make sure to check the product’s durability, life expectancy, and warranty information. With the right information and professional painters to paint your boat, you’re sure to get the best results and enjoy your boat for years to come.
